How did we “get started”? In 1961, five years after graduating from Clemson University, my father was working as an inspector for the meat packaging company, Swift & Company. My sister was born in November, weighing only 1 pound 12 ½ ounces. Her healthcare was quite expensive and she had the dubious honor of becoming one of the first infants placed in one of the brand new “incubators” at Crawford Long hospital in Atlanta. My father decided to take on a part time job to help offset the unexpected expenses and he went to work in the evenings as a janitor. One of the owners of the janitorial company was a sergeant in the US Army, as my father had been. They developed a friendship that grew stronger through the years and when the owner was called back to Korea by the Army, he offered to sell his company to my father. He agreed and with that, my father changed titles from janitor to owner although he actually had no employees! My mother and father worked together to build the business by contacting business in the Atlanta area. Being one of the very first commercial janitorial businesses in Atlanta made it easier to grow the company since there was barely any competition. Originally named Hi-Lo Cleaners (Hi Quality, Low Price!), in 1964 the company became incorporated under the new name Master Janitorial Services, Inc. Although I had worked part time for our company while in high school, in 1974 I joined the company as a full time employee. I have been a janitor, porter, lead man, supervisor, project manager, operations manager, sales manager, general manager and I am presently the president, or Top Mop! In 1980 we changed our name to Master Building Services, Inc. to better reflect the idea that we are a building services company that provides a variety of services with a special emphasis on janitorial.
